‘ Laser toning ’ is a procedure that has become so famous that even people who do not visit dermatology clinics know it.
You can think of it as a procedure that delivers low-level energy targeting pigment to the whole face, aiming to even out a blotchy face into one tone.
For a crybaby like me, it is an uncomfortable pain, but please think of it as a simple procedure that most clients receive with a relaxed expression and without anesthesia.
It has now settled in as almost the standard treatment for dark lesions on the face such as melasma, blemishes, and lentigines.
In the past, treatment worked by removing lesions quickly with strong energy (of course, some people still want that kind of treatment today), but relapses were frequent and side effects such as pigmentation or hypopigmented patches appeared, so the energy was gradually lowered, and what settled in as a result is today’s toning.
If you look at articles written by many dermatologists, they explain this principle using difficult terms and difficult graphs.
Of course, they are excellent materials if you can understand them, but I thought they might be a bit difficult for people who have not studied dermatology..
I would like to explain it in simple words.
The laser wavelength used for toning is 1064nm. (It’s already getting difficult..)
This wavelength range can reach from the very shallow layers of the skin to the deep layers.
At the same time, the absorption by melanin, which causes pigment problems, is at a moderate level.
And the absorption by blood vessels is at a low level.
....
In other words, it can reach the pigment in all layers of the skin, but the response is only moderate, and it barely touches the blood vessels — that is how it can be interpreted.
Here a question arises!
What if we use a wavelength range that responds better to pigment?
: That’s a good question. However, wavelengths that respond well to pigment cannot reach the pigment in all layers of the skin, so they deliver energy only to the pigment in the shallow layers, and therefore cannot treat pigment in the deep layers.
2. What is the point of affecting blood vessels?
: When absorption by blood vessels goes up, it damages the surrounding tissue. The damage itself is a problem, but it can also become a cause of pigmentation.
So you can simply understand that laser toning uses a wavelength range that can treat the pigment across the entire skin without side effects.
But the fact that the absorption by melanin is only moderate is not exactly a pleasant thing from either the practitioner’s or the patient’s standpoint.
Also, since each person responds differently to laser treatment, it is truly difficult to say that you will improve after a certain number of sessions!
However, from experience, among those who receive 10 toning sessions, after about 5 sessions there is a 10-20% improvement, and
From the 6th session, the rate of improvement becomes faster.
So please don’t do things like a single toning session..
And please avoid stopping at 5 toning sessions as well, if possible..
In fact, it is right to start from at least 10 sessions.
For those who haven’t seen results,
Not enough sessions
Enough sessions, but the treating doctor lacked experience
The energy was way too~ low
My pigment and the laser wavelength did not match
That about sums it up.
If
When my pigment lies only in the shallow layers (feat. freckles)
It is treated with a wavelength range that has high absorption by melanin and reaches only the shallow layers of the skin.
IPL will be a good solution.
For these people, even doing nothing but toning over and over has no effect..
But you can assume there are almost no people who have only freckles and no other pigment at all.
Some people in their early 20s have only freckles, but I should tell you that once you are past your mid-20s, proper treatment requires targeting the pigment in all layers of the skin.
An experienced doctor can tell the depth of pigment at a glance.
If a machine that analyzes the skin precisely, such as Markview, is used together with it, the diagnosis will become even more accurate.
Today I briefly explained the principle of laser toning.
I will also cover, some day, which treatment is suitable for each type of pigment disorder.
